In life, we’ve secretly been trained on the importance of external things: What position we hold in our respective careers, what kind of car we drive, how many degrees we obtained in school, what kind of house we live in, and the list can go on. Though I don’t think there’s anything wrong with any of these things, I’ve discovered that all of these external things left me searching for more and more on the inside.
Can anyone relate?
See, life is a balance and as we continue to pursue every external thing that’s placed in front of us, we create an imbalance on the inside. In my past, I was afraid to dig deep, to discover what’s really important to me on the inside; not what society deems important. Time and time again, I remained “surfaced”. When I say “surfaced”, I mean it in the most literal sense: staying away or avoiding deeper friendships (with some great people I might add), dodging accountability, not really looking for a “go to” person to just talk to. I could go on and on, but through those times I learned an important lesson. Surfaced people will do surface things. I was ok with the surfaced lifestyle. It lacked vulnerability and I didn’t have to look in the mirror and start cleaning up the wounds.
My life during that season exemplified superficial movements. But, through that season, my faith, mental and spiritual walk changed. My relationship with God strengthened the more and more I went beneath the surface. I began to realize and discover the things that were important to me. Also, realizing it was opposite (in a lot of ways) of what society prioritized. This is something I wouldn’t change.
The reason I oddly stepped out and wrote out of a place of vulnerability and availability is to encourage you. We all go through different phases in our lives and we all have many things that we’re pursuing. My challenge to each and every one of you who will read this is: Dig deep beneath the surface in your own life. Find you some close people that you can confide in (community), for those that are spiritual, pray. There’s a lot of fruit in all of our lives when we begin to dig deeper beneath the surface of our lives.
Let’s move forward with balance. Be in tune with both your internal self and what you aspire for externally. I support your dreams.
